Okinawa Prefecture is the southernmost prefecture of Japan. It comprises hundreds of the Ryukyu Islands in a chain over 1,000 kilometers (620 mi) long. The Ryukyus extend southwest from Kyūshū (the southwestern most of Japan's main four islands) to Taiwan. The Okinawa Prefecture encompasses the southern two thirds of that chain. Climate and weather
Okinawa's climate is subtropical, with temperatures barely falling below 15 degrees in winter. The Island experiences temperatures above 20 °C for most of the year. Okinawa and the many islands that make up the prefecture contain some of the most abundant coral reefs found in the world. Rare blue corals are found off of Ishigaki and Miyako islands as are numerous species throughout the chain.
Transportation
Air traffic has always been the most important mode of traffic for the Island. The most important of which is the Naha International Airport, which was established in 2001. Nowadays, more and more tourists choose to drive private car in visiting different parts of Okinawa which allows them to have more freedom and convenience. Other self driving, there are also minibus services provided to travel to most of the important and popular attractions.

Okinawan cuisine is also known as Ryukyuan cuisine, a reference to the Ryukyu Kingdom. Okinawan cuisine differs from mainland Japanese cuisine because of differences in culture, historical contact between other regions, climate, vegetables and other ingredients.
Okinawans are known for their longevity. Five times as many Okinawans live to be 100 than the rest of Japan, and the Japanese are the longest lived nationality in the world. People relate their dining habit to the secret of longevity as most traditional Okinawan dishes are low-fat, low-salt foods, such as fish, tofu, and seaweed, for instance Okinawa soba, Taco rice, Umi budo and Sukugarasu.
Famous attractions
Shuri Castle is a Ryūkyūan castle in Shuri, Okinawa. It was the palace of the Ryūkyū Kingdom. In 1945, during the Battle of Okinawa, it was almost completely destroyed as towards the end of World War Two, Okinawa became the stage of one of the war's bloodiest battles. In 1992, it was reconstructed on the original site based on photographs, historical records, and memory. Informative exhibits are on display outlining the history of the Ryukyu Kingdom as well as the interaction with the Japanese mainland and China.
The Churaumi Aquarium is widely considered Japan's best aquarium. The Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium is located within the Ocean Expo Park. The highlight of a visit to the Churaumi Aquarium is the massive Kuroshio Tank, one of the largest in the world. The tank takes its name from the warm Kuroshio Current which plays a large part in the variety of Okinawa's of marine life where u can see the giant whale sharks and manta rays.
Diving should be hard to beat, especially in Okinawa. With warm water, visibility up to 40 meters and marine life galore, the Kerama islands and Ishigaki Island have some of the best diving spots.
