Sapporo is the political, economic and cultural center of Hokkaido. It is also the fourth-largest city in Japan by population, and the largest city on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. The Former Hokkaido Government Office, the Sapporo Clock Tower, and Hokkaido University are all located in this area. When touring these buildings visitors can experience the history of Hokkaido firsthand.
The city is the manufacturing centre of Hokkaido, manufacturing various goods such as food and related products, fabricated metal products, steel, machinery, beverages, and pulp and paper. Fresh vegetables, fruits and seafood come from all over Hokkaido to Sapporo as it is the center of food distribution for the area. This contributes to a thriving food culture in Sapporo. Ramen noodles, Genghis Khan, sushi and seafood, and soup curry are some of the famous local dishes.
The tertiary sector dominates Sapporo's industry. Major industries include information technology, retail, and tourism, as Sapporo is a destination for winter sports and events and summer activities due to its cool climate. Sapporo is also a perfect place to family travelers. There are many family-fun options such as Takino Suzuran Hillside National Park, which has many outdoor activities, and Sapporo Satoland, an agriculture-themed park. The city's annual Yuki Matsuri, internationally refers to as the Sapporo Snow Festival. It has become a major wintertime spectacle in Sapporo attracting over 2 million visitors from all over Japan and abroad.
Climate and weather
Sapporo has a humid continental climate with a wide range of temperature difference between the summer and winter. Summers are generally warm but not humid, and winters are cold and very snowy. . It is rare by world standards that over 1.9 million people reside in an area prone to this much snowfall.

Everyone will think of miso ramen whenever Sapporo is memtioned.Sapporo is known as the birthplace of miso ramen, a ramen noodle dish using miso, and Sapporo ramen is also widely known. The Kouraku Ramen Meitengai, an alley lined with many ramen restaurants, was established in 1951 in Susukino district.
Another Sapporo must-try is Soup curry, a liquid curry with vegetables and chicken. Plenty of soup curry restaurants are in the cities and towns in Hokkaido. Every soup curry restaurant is different with their own recipe for the mix of special soup and spices.
For fresh food, Nijo Market can definitely fulfill what you need. It is a public market in central Sapporo that occupies about one city block. Both locals and tourists visit the market to shop for fresh local produce and seafood such as crabs, salmon eggs, sea urchin and various fresh and prepared fish.
Famous attractions
Sapporo draws many tourists every year thanks to the large number of historical buildings, as well as shopping malls and parks it has. Former Hokkaidō government office building, the Sapporo Clock Tower, the Hokkaidō Shrine and the Sapporo TV Tower are the most famous landmarks in Sapporo. On the other hand, the Sapporo Factory was a former brewery of the Sapporo Brewery and is currently a huge shopping mall with many restaurants, offices, and multiplex movie theatres. Another former brewery, located in the Sapporo Garden Park, is now the Sapporo Beer Museum, which is currently a part of the, and houses the Sapporo Beer Gardens. The Sapporo City Archive Museum, the Edwin Dun Memorial Hall, and some old buildings in the Hokkaido University are historically important in Sapporo. Each was listed in the Registered Tangible Cultural Properties of Japan.
Sapporo offers many parks and gardens.For instance; Odori Park houses buildings, such as the Sapporo TV Tower, and hosts many events including Yosakoi Soran Festival, Sapporo Lilac Festival, Sapporo White Illumination, and the Sapporo Snow Festival. Each February, the Sapporo Snow Festival is held. The main site is the Odori Park, and other sites include Susukino and the Sapporo Satoland. Snow sculptures and ice sculptures large and small line Odori Park for around 1.5 km between 1-chome and 12-chome, and the statues are lit up at night.
